Gameplay
In “Grand Theft Auto IV,” you’ll find yourself immersed in an action-adventure experience presented from a third-person perspective. Your progression through the game’s narrative is achieved by completing missions—these are sequential scenarios with predefined objectives. What’s interesting is that you can have multiple missions active simultaneously, as some might require you to await further instructions or events. Beyond the missions, the game’s open world is at your disposal for exploration, and you can choose to tackle optional side missions as well.
The game world, which encompasses the fictional city of Liberty City, boasts a larger area compared to earlier entries in the Grand Theft Auto series. As you commence your journey, you’ll be confined to exploring the initial island, comprised of Dukes and Broker, with additional islands unlocking as the story unfolds.
To navigate challenges, you have an array of options. Employ melee attacks, wield firearms, and deploy explosives to fend off adversaries. Whether on foot or in vehicles, you can run, jump, swim, and move about the expansive world. Moreover, the game offers a first-person perspective when using vehicles. In combat situations, you can utilize auto-aim and a cover system to gain an advantage over enemies. Sustaining damage will impact your health, but fear not—you can fully regenerate your health meter by consuming food, drinks, medical kits, or even requesting assistance from paramedics.
Plot
You step into the shoes of Niko Bellic, an Eastern European ex-soldier, as he embarks on a new chapter in his life in Liberty City. Arriving on the cargo ship known as the Platypus, Niko is seeking an escape from his tumultuous criminal past, chasing the elusive American Dream, and on a mission to find the individual who betrayed his military unit during a war a decade prior. Reuniting with his cousin Roman, he quickly discovers that the stories of Roman’s wealth were mere fabrications, masking a reality of a modest, cramped apartment, an unprofitable taxi company, mounting gambling debts, and clashes with ruthless loan sharks.
The first steps on his journey involve helping Roman navigate his challenges, which thrusts Niko into his first interactions with the city’s criminal underbelly. Along the way, he forms a bond with Yardies underboss, Little Jacob, and reluctantly associates with Roman’s Russian loan shark, Vlad Glebov, whom Niko later eliminates upon learning of Vlad’s affair with Roman’s girlfriend, Mallorie.
However, Niko’s actions set off a chain of events that lead him and Roman into danger. They’re kidnapped by Russian mobsters under orders from their boss, Mikhail Faustin, and his lieutenant, Dimitri Rascalov. Although Niko kills Vlad without Faustin’s punishment, it’s only a matter of time before he’s drawn deeper into the criminal world. Faustin employs Niko as a hitman, eventually assigning him the task of eliminating the son of Russian crime lord Kenny Petrović.
